Storyline

One of the less gruesome cannibal tales. A woman is searching for her missing sister and she finds hope in the folly of a dead hit-man who has a film on him. The film shows some sadistic torture and a brief cameo by her sister taken by a documentary film crew who obviously didn't make it out. She then leaves for the jungle joined by cannibal film regular Robert Kerman (playing Mark Butler), where they meet up with the standard Cannibal tribe and a Jim Jones like cult leader. Of course escape is next to impossible with the always-hungry cannibals waiting them out and the crazy followers of the suicide cult leader ready to eat them on command. Written by Sujit R. Varma

Alternate Versions

The original UK cinema release was heavily cut by the BBFC to remove graphic scenes of gore and violence. For its 1987 video release the film had been extensively pre-cut by the distributors before submission, removing 5 mins 42 secs of footage. The cuts included all footage of cannibalism, explicit rape scenes, the castration of a native man, and a man's ear being severed. The print used also replaced many of the nude scenes with alternative clothed footage. The animal violence was also cut including a snake killing a monkey, scenes of a snake fighting a mongoose and a bird, and the mutilations of a crocodile and an iguana. The BBFC made an additional 1 sec cut to remove the penetration of the crocodile's head with a knife. This same print was used for the later Vipco releases. See more »

Profoundly stupid but entertaining cannibal trash.
8 November 2003 | by InfofreakSee all my reviews

'Eaten Alive' is a profoundly stupid movie, but despite that, or more accurately, BECAUSE of that it's extremely entertaining trash. It rehashes plot elements (and even footage) from previous Italian cannibal movies and adds a Jim Jones-ish death cult in for good measure. Italian exploitation star Ivan Rassimov plays Jonas, the cult leader, Janet Agren (Fulci's 'City Of The Living Dead') the sister of a missing woman, and Robert Kerman (Deodato's infamous 'Cannibal Holocaust') the man hired to find her. The cast also includes Paola Senatore and Mei Mei Lai, both favourites with cult/sleaze buffs. The version of 'Eaten Alive' I watched was the British cut which has most of the more infamous scenes censored or completely removed. I really don't know if this was a good or a bad thing. I believe most of this stuff was recycled from earlier Lenzi films or "borrowed" from my fave cannibal movie 'Mountain Of The Cannibal God', so if you're familiar with this genre you've probably seen it all before already. Anyway, most people run away screaming from this kinda stuff, but if you're into movies like this you'll find much to enjoy here. Neither the best nor the worst cannibal movie, but definitely worth a look.
