On the eve of retirement, Kirk and McCoy are charged with assassinating the Klingon High Chancellor and imprisoned. The Enterprise crew must help them escape to thwart a conspiracy aimed at sabotaging the last best hope for peace.

Walter M. Jefferies, who had been the production designer on Star Trek (1966), and therefore responsible for the sleek Navy-esque design of the television series' Enterprise, claimed that the Enterprise used in the movies looked like "the lobby of the Hilton". He fell asleep during the first movie and never watched any subsequent incarnations of Star Trek. See more »
When the Enterprise is departing from Earth the Sun is seen to rise above the Earth. However sunrise is normally due to the rotation of the Earth, or in the case of the International Space Station the vehicle moving in a posigrade orbit round the Earth. In this case, the Enterprise is moving in the opposite direction, so if we were following it then the Sun would be seen to set if the Enterprise was in orbit. On the other hand, if the Enterprise was moving in an almost straight line, the Sun could come into view as the apparent size of the Earth diminished due to the Enterprise moving away from it. As the size of the Earth does not appear to change, the Sun can only appear to rise if the position of our viewpoint is moving in that same direction, but if that were so, we would be moving upwards, away from the Enterprise. This isn't happening either, so the scene might look nice but it is incorrect. See more »

Decker asks Sulu to take Ilia "in hand". He then gives her a brief explanation of the computer. Ilia reminds Sulu of her oath of celibacy, and Decker informs Ilia that the captain didn't mean anything personally, and Ilia says she would never take advantage of a sexually immature species.
After the wormhole, and after Kirk, Bones and Decker depart for quarters, there is another short Sulu/Ilia exchange about current speed and current heading. Ilia then confirms it. Both these scenes were apparently shot to provide a sense of romance between the two, but were deleted to clear up Decker's same relation.
Rather than Kirk saying, "Make your point, Doctor" when discussing the obsession with the Enterprise, there is one brief exchange, and McCoy gives his line in a medium shot, rather than a shot of the two standing side-by-side.
During the attack on the Enterprise, the ship actually gets hit by an extra energy torpedo. We hear it, and the lighting also suggests it, but we never see it. Some minor scene extensions are added. There is also an alternate take of Spock's analysis.
There is a short scene in which Spock reveals the frequency of V'Ger's transmission. This appears in the Director's Edition.
Decker takes over Chekov after his hand is burned, and a female crew member takes over for him. Decker goes to help Spock, and we return to the theatrical footage of the second (or third) energy torpedo being fired.
Chekov returns to his post after a humorous exchange from Spock and Bones reveals that V'Ger emits more radiation than the Sun.
The famous footage of Kirk shadowing Spock during the space walk sequence is included.
There is an alternate take when Nurse Chapel gives Ilia's headband to the Ilia probe.
The Ilia probe mentions that the creator is on the third planet. She then removes the headband, and asks why two carbon units have entered V'Ger. Bones replies that they wish to contact it. Decker asks if V'Ger has a problem with that, and Ilia says no. V'Ger will find out their purpose. Bones says it is to survive, and Ilia says it is V'Ger's purpose as well to survive. Decker implies that V'Ger's purpose was to find and join with the creator, and Ilia replies that is how V'Ger will survive.
Bones says V'Ger says its creator is a machine, to which Decker replies "We all create God in our own image."
"Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Director's Edition"
"Star Trek: The Motion Picture" is by far the most important of the series and in my opinion also the best. This Director's Cut has improved and tightened the 1979 theatrical release to create a truer version of the director's original vision. In most cases Director's Cuts ruin the original Motion Picture they set out to improve, yet this film is the exception. What Robert Wise did here was very necessary and it has been accomplished with great reverence for the original material. This is now the authoritative version of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and justly so.
What I admire about this first incarnation to the big screen is the faith that Robert Wise obviously has for his audience. Scenes are purposely slow which allows the atmosphere of the film to wash over the viewer like a warm bath rather than being bombarded by action and explosions as in the second of the Motion Picture series.
There are obvious references to Stanley Kubrick's 2001:A Space Odyssey (1967), which I admire because to want to aspire to those heights and nearly succeed can only be regarded with respect.
I have to say that the production design by Harold Michelson has never been bettered. The scope of his sets gives real life and location to the interior of the Star Ship Enterprise. The gathering of the whole crew in the lounge for example or Kirk emotionally trapped in his quarters by the dark glass sliding doors. The bridge of the Enterprise has never looked, sounded or functioned better. (It would have been nice to hear the old sliding door sounds!)
A criticism would have to be levelled at the costume design, which I found uninspired, dreary and slightly camp. Decker's skin-tight body suit reveals more than modesty should allow! I suppose underwear is obsolete in the 23rd century? Kirk's sleeveless white shirt is quite off- putting, as I couldn't stop staring a William Shatner's extremely hairy arms. Yet these are my only criticisms. I really enjoy this film and have done so since its release. This version finally completes an unfinished work and improves upon it to such a degree that Trekkies will have to reevaluate yet again which is the best of the Motion Picture series. As for me apart from the original series this is Star Trek's finest hour!
