Trivia

The Rutles originally began as a sketch on Eric Idle's UK show Rutland Weekend Television (1975), showing the band (with Idle as Harrison) playing a slower version of "I Must Be in Love" in their movie "A Hard Day's Rut." Lorne Michaels aired the clip on Saturday Night Live (1975) when Idle hosted, which led to a deal for the TV special. See more »

Goofs

The 'Tragical History Tour' film within the film says it was made in 1968, but the bus has a 'J' suffix registration plate which means the bus was first registered between August 1970 and July 1971. See more »

Quotes

Dirk McQuickly: What Ron and I will do is probably to write some songs y'know, and sell them to people... uh... we tried to write some for the uh, The Rolling Stones, and they're probably gonna buy them.
Mick Jagger: The one for that was Dirk really, he was the real huckster for the songs, I think. Y'know, always wantin' to sell us songs, y'know. They came down... they came down and we were trying to rehearse, and they said "you wanna song?, said "yeah" cause we were really open for songs, cause we didn't write our own. ...

Alternate Versions

The original TV version contains one scene which is about 30 seconds longer than the alternate video version. Narrator Eric Idle asks Brian Thigh (Dan Aykroyd), the man who turned down the Rutles: "What's it like to be such a jerk?" He continues criticizing Thigh until he shoots himself. In the video version, Idle simply asks: "What's it like to be such an asshole?" See more »

My review of The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash...
24 November 2000 | by kblackwell-2See all my reviews

A perfect blend of Monty Python and Saturday Night Live in this mock-umentary about the greatest rock group of all time, The Beatles. Eric Idle is hilarious as the interviewer/narrator, with cameos from some big-named stars, such as Mick Jagger, George Harrison, John Belushi, Michael Palin, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Lorne Michaels, Gilda Radner, Paul Simon and more. An instant classic if you love Monty Python, SNL, or the Beatles....
