Meryl Streep in ‘Big Little Lies’: First look at her in character as Nicole Kidman’s mother-in-law from hell
Meryl Streep may look like a kindly grandmother in this first photo from the second season of “Big Little Lies.” But looks can be deceiving. She plays Mary Louise Wright who has come to town to get answers from her daughter-in-law Celeste (Nicole Kidman) about the death of her son Perry (Alexander Skarsgard). Expect plenty of fireworks as these two women face off.

For the first time on-screen, Streep is playing a character with her real first name. Likewise, she is acting opposite Kidman for the first time. While they both appeared in “The Hours” back in 2002, they didn’t share the screen. Kidman won the Oscar for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf while Streep was snubbed by the academy. We might also see Streep working with another Oscar winner, Reese Witherspoon, who both stars and produces in this Emmy-winning HBO series.

Since her breakthrough role in the 1978 miniseries “Holocaust,

Meryl Streep has landed in Monterey.

Nicole Kidman, star and executive producer of HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” shared the first photo of the Oscar-winning actress on set of the drama series’ second season, wearing a robe and short, brown wig. “First day on the set with Meryl and ‘my’ darling boys!” she wrote.

HBO announced back in December that the Emmy-winning miniseries would return for a second season, with nearly all of the original cast since signing on to return, including Kidman and fellow Ep Reese Witherspoon.

David E. Kelley will write and executive produce Season 2, which will be based, in part, on story by “Big Little Lies” author Liane Moriarty. Andrea Arnold will direct all seven installments.

Big Little Lies” marks Streep’s first major foray into television since the HBO miniseries adaptation “Angels in America,” which earned the actress an Emmy award in 2004. Streep has also taken home Emmys in 1978 and 2017, for the NBC miniseries “Holocaust” and for narrating the Netflix docuseries “Five Came Back,” respectively.

Meryl Streep in ‘The Deer Hunter’: A look back at her first Oscar nomination, the competition and the outcome

Meryl Streep in ‘The Deer Hunter’: A look back at her first Oscar nomination, the competition and the outcome
This article marks Part 1 of the 21-part Gold Derby series analyzing Meryl Streep at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at Meryl Streep’s nominations, the performances that competed with her, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.

Prior to 1978, Meryl Streep was best-known for her acclaimed New York stage work. She made five Broadway appearances between 1975 and 1977, including a turn in “A Memory of Two Mondays/27 Wagons Full of Cotton” (1976) that brought Streep her first – and to date, only – Tony Award nomination. Her sole big screen appearance was a small, albeit memorable, turn opposite Jane Fonda in “Julia” (1977).

Streep’s name recognition increased significantly in 1978. First, there was her much-heralded performance in the epic NBC miniseries “Holocaust” that resulted in an Emmy Award. It was her second-ever appearance in a feature film, however – and in a Best Picture Academy Awards winner, no

Meryl Streep joins ‘Big Little Lies’ season 2 — will she win her fourth Emmy?

Meryl Streep joins ‘Big Little Lies’ season 2 — will she win her fourth Emmy?
Fresh off her record 21st Oscar nomination for “The Post,” Meryl Streep is setting her sights on the Emmys: the three-time Oscar and three-time Emmy winner has joined the second season of “Big Little Lies,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Streep will play Mary Louise Wright (fun fact: Streep’s birth name is Mary Louise), the mother of Alexander Skarsgard’s Perry Wright, who — spoiler alert! — died in the first season finale. Mary Louise drops by Monterey because she’s concerned about the well-being of her grandchildren after her son’s death.

This means we’ll definitely get some screentime between Streep and Nicole Kidman, who plays Skarsgard’s widow Celeste and with whom Streep co-starred, albeit with no shared scenes, in “The Hours” (2002). (Dear David E. Kelley: Please be sure to write a scene with Kidman screaming “I’m dying in this town!” in Streep’s face. Thanks!
