Storyline

With Mulder off on a week's mandatory leave, Scully is on her own and feeling put upon. While in Philadelphia she meets Edward Jerse who asks her out to dinner. Ed had recently gone through a nasty divorce. Despondent and more than a little drunk, he got a tattoo. Soon after, he began hearing voices and lashing out at work. He lost his job and disposed of a neighbor who he thought was tormenting him. After drinks, Scully gets a tattoo of her own, but the next day two Philadelphia police detectives show up at Jerse's apartment investigating his neighbor's disappearance. Scully may have found a medical reason for Ed's hallucinations. Written by garykmcd

Trivia

The sound of "Betty's" voice repeatedly pans between the left and right channels to heighten the sense that the sound is inside Ed's head. See more »

Goofs

When Ed Jerse broke into the apartment below him to attack Kaye Schilling, he damaged the door upon entering. Later, when the two people of faith came calling, they knocked on the door but left assuming no one was home. It's unlikely the door to the apartment would have been repaired with no one inspecting the apartment or looking for Miss Schilling to find out how it got damaged. See more »

Fascinating Insight
2 October 2006 | by pablohoneyxSee all my reviews

One of my favorite episodes because of the way it draws from the often-neglected dark core of the show (yes, many of the story lines are "dark", but I'm talking about the flawed and deep humanity of the characters) - Scully and Mulder's relationship is not all roses, there are deep problems and resentments that must have fostered over the past few years. Sure, it bothers Scully when Mulder ditches her and Mulder hates it when she immediately dismisses his theories, but one would think that over the years, it would cause some type of underlying problem or influence the evolution of their relationship somehow.

Morgan and Wong have a definite gift for writing character development, providing glimpses of our heroes' souls. An exposition of their relationship was sorely needed, whether it be good or bad - a departure from a glossed over hand-hold or icy comment. Mulder's deeply human self-involvement was magnified by the situation but also realized - something I think people have been waiting for - redemption for ditching Scully so much and for generally being inconsiderate (not necessarily a cause for dislike of the character, though). Too bad there weren't more episodes like this!
