The film is full of cross-references and sly appearances. Larry juices carrots here, and slices them as the character Moss in "The Paper Chase". Helen Hanft plays her scenes behind a counter and cash register at the health food shop in the exact same position she does in the liquor store scene from "Moonstruck". The bohemian friends on their way to Anita's suicide parade through the same street where Bob Dylan shot his "Freewheelin' " album cover. Scenes in the Caffe Reggio are shot in the exact same spots as "Shaft" and "The Godfather II". There's a Franz Kline painting in the Dr.'s office. Director Mazursky plays a director in the casting scene. Bill Murray has a couple scenes as a crowd extra. Rashel Novikoff as Mrs. Tupperman was a favorite actress of Woody Allen. A heavily made-up, uncredited Woody plays the old love-poem seller, Jake, in the early bar scene.
