- Dr Parimal Tripathi (Dharmendra) is a botany professor & is in Shimla guest house for research. The guard's (Dev Kishan) grandson is sick, but he refuses to go see him as a group of students is about to arrive. Parimal promises him to cover his shift and work & makes him leave. Meanwhile, he disguises himself as the bungalow watchman to protect the old man's job. The arriving group of students are all girls & include Sulekha (Sharmila Tagore) who is also a botany student & has heard of Dr Parimal as his books are part of their curriculum.
Parimal (as guard) tells Sulekha that Dr Piramal is old and has gone to see his grandson. He says that he is expected to return after the girls have left. Sulekha is very interested in Dr Piramal and tries to know about him from the guard. She learns that they are both from Allahabad.
Before leaving she finds out that Parimal was posing as the guard (when the real guard returns from his village, and she overhears Parimal talking to him) & secretly develops a crush on him. She leaves her address for him & Parimal asks for her hand in marriage from her elder brother Haripad. Haripad's (David Abraham Cheulkar) brother-in-law is Raghav who is unable to attend the wedding.
They both get married. Parimal loves playing pranks and is the antithesis of regular professors. Sulekha, on the other hand, is in awe of her Jijaji (brother-in-law) Raghavendra (Om Prakash). She considers her Jijaji to be highly intellectual and looks upon him as her idol. Sulekha says that Raghav could have been a minister, but set up a soap factory instead, and is also very handsome. Parimal develops an inferiority complex thanks to Sulekha's excessive praise of her Jijaji and decides to prove that he is in no way a lesser mortal. Sulekha holds Raghav (Jijaji) in very high regard & so much so that angers Parimal.
Sukumar Sinha (Amitabh Bachchan) is Parimal's very good friend, almost brother. Sukumar is earmarked by another of Parimal's friend Prashant for marriage to his sister-in-law Vasudha (Jaya Bhaduri), although Prashant hasn't discussed this matter with Sukumar yet. Prashant and Parimal are old friends from college days, although Prashant's wife has not met Parimal as they also could not attend their wedding.
Jijaji, meanwhile, has written a letter to Haripad Bhaiyya asking him to send a driver who can speak good Hindi because his present driver James D'Costa (Keshto Mukherjee) uses improper dialect. This provides the perfect opportunity for Parimal to get to see and interact with Jijaji.
Raghav has invited Sulekha & Parimal to Mumbai for honeymoon & Parimal decides that he will go as a driver to seek employment with Raghav. Sulekha will come later saying Parimal has gone to Patna for work. Sulekha is sure that Jijaji will catch him in a minute as he has also seen Piramal's photo (but fortunately Haripad had sent Parimal's photos from his childhood).
Parimal wants to prove to Sulekha that he is as capable as Raghav & that he can hoodwink Raghav into believing that he is really a driver. Haripad reluctantly agrees & provides him references as a driver. Haripad calls Raghav and says that he is sending a driver, who is a bit eccentric. But he adds that the person is of good heart and Haripad should treat him well.
Raghav wants a driver who speaks pure Hindi. Parimal becomes Pyare Mohan Ilahabadi, a motor-mouth driver who pretends to hate the English language and so speaks only Hindi. Pyare Mohan's excessively refined Hindi, his habit of correcting Jijaji's usage of the language and his persistence in getting Jijaji to teach him English all serve to irk Jijaji to no end and provide for many laughs.
Parimal's long-time friend Prashant K Srivastava (Asrani) in Bombay is also party to the prank. Parimal tells him the story when he visits him at his office in Bombay.
Pyare acts super excited when he hears from Raghav that Sulekha is coming. He says that he likes Sulekha a lot as he worked as a driver during her wedding. When Sulekha comes, first they pretend that Sulekha is not happy with her new marriage. Sulekha says that Parimal is too serious and doesn't like any jokes or pranks. Pyare and Sulekha show unusually high interest in each other. They are even seen by Raghav & his wife serenading each other in Mumbai parks & visiting each other's room at night. Raghav gets very suspicious and believes that Sulekha is having an affair with the driver. Raghav confronts Sulekha & PyareMohan who don't admit or deny anything & just try to explain things away. Haripad is astounded that Parimal has been able to fool Raghav for so long.
One morning PyareMohan & Sulekha run away & that day Haripad arrives with Sukumar, who is posing as Parimal. Sukumar gets angry with Raghav upon hearing that Sulekha has run away with Pyare & goes to stay with Prashant instead.
There he finds Vasudha & falls in love with her. She wants to learn Botany & Parimal has to train Sukumar in Botany so he can act as Parimal in front of Vasudha. Sukumar professes his love to Vasudha & she is offended, as she knows him as Parimal.
Meanwhile Prashant's wife Lata (Lily Chakravarty), who is not in the loop, gets suspicious of developments between Sukumar (as Parimal) & Vasudha. When things get out of hand with Vasudha, Sukumar tells her the truth & she agrees to play along. Sukumar & Vasudha run away & get married. Then Sulekha returns with Pyare & they all confront Sukumar & Vasudha at the temple.
Haripad Bhaiyya coerces Pyare Mohan to 'kill' himself so that Parimal could surface. Thus, Jijaji comes to comprehend the whole enactment, finally admitting that he was truly fooled.
