    Storyline

    Edit
In 1902, John, his wife Maida (his real-life wife) and their infant son David are the only survivors of a ship that crashes into the rocky beach of an uncharted island during a violent storm. By 1912, David, now a seemingly happy 12-year-old boy, begins to enter puberty. By the time he is 17, he is consumed by lust for his mother, which drives a wedge between him and his father to the point where they hunt each other down for the affections of the only woman on the island. —Wiki

    Edit
    • Trivia
In an almost unprecedented move George C. Scott released this film in a unique way. He would sell the theatre a print and then split advertising costs with the theatre. The theatre would then keep all and any money they made when they showed the film. Scott was a major movie star at the time and this was a major effort to buck the whole system of how films were, and are to this day, distributed. Unfortunately the film did not find an audience but remains a daring attempt to change the way filmmaker and distribution work together.

      Young David: Mother?

      Maida: Yes?

Young David: Can we get married when I grow up?

Maida: Oh, David, you are such a funny child!

I saw this movie in 1974
when it came out. I was 20 years old (I am now 51 years old). I've never forgotten this movie in all these years. Now looking back, this was a subject matter that took a lot of guts to touch on way back then. Heck, incest would be a touchy subject matter even now! I saw it with my 2 sisters and I remember walking out of the movie 31 years ago just dumbstruck. Wow, what a story! I've never seen it in video stores and have never heard anything about it nor have I ever met anyone else that saw it back then when I did. (What did we do before the Internet?) If you ever get the chance to see it, do. I wouldn't watch it with any children under the age of 18. It's pretty graphic from what I can remember. And the ending, well, you just have to see it.
