Storyline

A Jewish ghetto in central Europe, 1944. By coincidence, Jakob Heym eavesdrops on a German radio broadcast announcing the Soviet Army is making slow by steady progress towards central Europe. In order to keep his companion in misfortune, Mischa, from risking his life for a few potatoes, he tells him what he heard and announces that he is in possession of a radio - in the ghetto a crime punishable by death. It doesn't take long for word of Jakob's secret to spread - suddenly, there is new hope and something to live for - and so Jakob finds himself in the uncomforting position of having to come up with more and more stories. Trivia

Because Vlastimil Brodský didn't speak German very well, he did all dialogues in his mother tongue and was dubbed over for the German release of the film. This language barrier also made the scenes of dialog between him and the other actors (especially Erwin Geschonneck) a challenge. See more »

Rosa Frankfurter: [playing checkers with her dad] You take ages to make a move.
Frankfurter: You want to win by rushing me, or by playing better?
Rosa Frankfurter: You're winning.
Frankfurter: By thinking.
Rosa Frankfurter: Each game lasts at least 2 hours.
Frankfurter: Better to win one than lose 5 time.
[he finally makes a move, his Rosa too]
Frankfurter: No, you'll lose your last checker.
[she makes another move]
Frankfurter: Wrong move.

Award winning and very interesting
27 April 2003 | by davorka46See all my reviews

This movie is a story full of lies that brought more hope to the Jews living in the Ghetto. Jakob was the one being outside after curfew and he had to report to the Police, and after walking into the station he heard some news on the Radio. He thought that it was good news that the Russians were coming closer. He could not m=keep that to himself so he went and told this to one of his friends who was not supposed to say anything. After a short while the whole Ghetto was talking about those news. Jakob saw that everybody was feeling much better so he continued to tell lies about the news. This is a movie that gets better and better as it moves along. It also gives hope to the Jewish people in the Ghetto and Jakob was having good intentions but it just complicated itself more and more.
