Trivia

Some of the media coverage of the Sonderditch mine disaster was handled by Springbok Radio. This was the South African Broadcasting Corporation's first commercial radio station, which aired between May 1950 and December 1985. Denis Smith was one of their presenters, perhaps most famous for hosting "The World at 7". See more »

Goofs

Once the news comes through that the mine is safe, the two villains watching get into a cat and mouse situation, with one attempting to run the other down using their Rolls-Royce. This culminates with the man on foot throwing a rock at and hitting the windscreen, causing the driver to lose control. But the shot from the throwers' point-of-view of the approaching car (his last sight) shows the windscreen undamaged. See more »

Alternate Versions

The original UK cinema version was heavily cut for an 'A' (PG) certificate by the BBFC with reductions to the amputation scene, and heavy edits to the fight scenes between King and Kowalski, and to shots of Steyner being pursued and hit by a car. The cuts were fully restored in later releases and the certificate upgraded to a '12'. See more »

Flawed but solid entertainment ...................
19 August 2011 | by merklekranzSee all my reviews

Technically, "Gold" is rather uneven at best. There are quite a number of underground scenes that are simply too dark. Another problem is scenes that go on far too long drag on the film. The whirlwind romance between Roger Moore and Susannah York takes up too much time and could have been tactfully trimmed, thus tightening the overlong run time of 120 minutes. On the plus side, is an interesting plot to flood a South African gold mine, which would cut world production by 30%, and drive up the price of gold. Moore's heroic attempt to save the flooding mine and save 1000 trapped men provides plenty of excitement. .................. - MERK
