Sex & Nudity

  • A man and woman are seen in bed together after having sex. The woman gets up and we could see her side breast for a couple seconds (partial breast nudity is shown in the scene). However, the nudity is brief and doesn't last long.
  • A man and woman start to kiss passionately; moments later they are seen lying in bed naked, sex is heavily implied.
  • We could briefly see a dead man's frontal nudity in a hospital morgue; a brief glimpse of lower nudity is visible in the scene.
  • Photographs of a man and woman having sex. No specific nudity. They are clothed except for their thighs/side buttocks.
  • A man's buttocks are briefly shown as he puts on pants.
  • A woman references incest in one scene, nothing is explicitly described.
  • A man makes a sexual joke in one scene (the word "screw" is used repeatedly)
  • Probably the main reason for the R rating is for one brief scene of female nudity and then one brief scene of male nudity, other than that there's a few mild sex jokes (will fly over kids heads).
  • Some sexual discussion occurs in the film, usually in the form of jokes and references.

Violence & Gore

  • Two murdered bodies are discovered at two different times in the film(1 man and 1 woman).
  • A man's nose is slit, blood is shown, but he quickly covers it.
  • Some fistfights, including characters being beaten up and thrown against walls. Characters are punched repeatedly in the fistfight scenes.
  • A woman is slapped many times.
  • A woman has a black eye implying that her husband struck her.
  • A man is shot in the arm and slightly injured.

  • Other swear words include "goddamn" "hell" and "asshole", used a couple times each.
  • "Screw" is used several times in one scene, as a sexual joke.
  • "Chinaman" is used in one scene.
  • Some strong language is used in the film.
  • Fairly mild language for an R rated movie, only one use of "fuck" a few race related language such as "chinaman" but other than that, it's PG-13 language ("Damn", "hell", "ass" and "shit")
  • There is 1 F-word, there are also some mild racial stereotyping by the characters

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Several instances of cigarette smoking by characters, as accurate for the time period.
  • Smoking throughout entire movie. A couple scenes of social drinking.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The film as a whole has a dark premise, as it centers on themes of corruption and also our powerlessness against evil. These dark themes play an important part in the plot of the film, and are even subtly stated through dialogue.
  • The entire movie is fairly intense. Many characters are threatened.
  • There are two murders, both of which could be intense to some viewers.

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • A woman confesses to a man that she had a incestuous relationship with her father, the man then asks if he raped her, and she denies it. This is not shown, only discussed. It also remains uncertain if she did it out of free will or was coerced into the act.

Violence & Gore

  • The bloody aftermath of a murder is shown in one scene, with some blood shown in the scene.
  • A woman is shot through the eye and killed (we don't see the impact but we briefly see the bloody wound).

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The ending of this film can be depressing for some viewers.
  • The ending is arguably the most unsatisfyingly disturbing ending in cinema history , next to Oldboy and Arlington Road .
