Ann Barrett: Isn't it just another so-called haunted house?
Dr. Lionel Barrett: It's the Mount Everest of haunted houses. There were two attempts to investigate it. Both were disasters. Eight people died. Fischer was the only one who survived, and when he crawled out he was a mental wreck.

Alternate Versions

"SPOILER ALERT" When Dr. Barrett meets his demise towards the end of the film, most video releases depict one of his instruments exploding, then cut to the scene in which Mr. Fischer & Mrs. Barrett return to the laboratory and find his dead body under a fallen chandelier. However, in at least one edited for television version the scene continues as Dr. Barraett recoils from the explosion, then begins staggering through his laboratory as a supernatural wind picks up and his instruments are exploding around him. He then stumbles to the ground, and the chandelier falls on his head. See more »

A must for horror fans
16 July 2003 | by rufasffSee all my reviews

In spite of some questionable motivations and a fairly silly ending,

this horror drama has become a real favorite.

The excellent cast has a field day with the talky script; and

director John Hough (best known for "The Avengers) does an imaginative

job using fresh, distorted set ups that keep you off center. And The

movie looks great. High praise must also go to the score and use of sound effects. If

the ending was a little better, this would be a real classic. But for

horror fans, it's a nine out of ten. Roddy, you were enjoyed.
