Mr. and Mrs. Bo Jo Jones (1971 TV Movie)
- Summaries (2)
High school senior and his girlfriend get married when they find out she's pregnant.
It's 1956 in the beach town of Trilby. After asking the questions pertaining to the situation, sixteen year old working class Robert Joseph Jones - who prefers to be called Bo Jo - asks his same aged girlfriend, upper middle class Julie Greher, to marry him in doing what he believes to be the right thing after she tells him that she is ten weeks pregnant from their one and only sexual encounter, the secret wedding which happens the following day. These are only the first steps in both Bo Jo and Julie doing and saying what they believe are the right things under the circumstance regardless of what they may actually feel. Their life inexperience is shown in the process, which includes each finding out what little he/she really knows of the other. They both to some extent realize that being married means the loss of their innocence and the loss of their individual planned futures - which for both was college and Bo Jo working toward a football scholarship on the hopes of becoming All American. The situation is further complicated by both sets of parents injecting more than their two-cents worth into what Bo Jo and Julie should do, with Mr. and Mrs. Greher throwing their financial weight to get what they want under the situation, much which has to do with putting on the best public face. During difficult times, Julie often turns her thoughts of what may have been with an older overly sensitive college boy named Evan Clark who has shown some romantic interest in her, those thoughts which she probably would not have had if it were not for the problems. Julie may get a further perspective of married life from her new friend, slightly older Lee Baragan, who has been married for two years which for her is well past the honeymoon phase, and from Julie's paternal grandmother, who may be able to see marriage for Julie and Bo Jo beyond the situation of them having had to get married due to the pregnancy. Whether there is a long term future for Bo Jo and Julie as Mr. and Mrs. Jones may depend on the hypothetical if there was no Baby Jones on the way in their lives.
