Storyline

Almost in breadth and depth of a documentary, this movie depicts an auto race during the 70s on the world's hardest endurance course: Le Mans in France. The race goes over 24 hours on 14.5 kilometers of cordoned country road. Every few hours the two drivers per car alternate - but it's still a challenge for concentration and material. In the focus is the duel between the German Stahler in Ferrari 512LM and the American Delaney in Gulf Team Porsche 917. Delaney is under extraordinary pressure, because the year before he caused a severe accident, in which his friend Lisa's husband was killed. Trivia

In many ways, it was lucky this film was made in 1970, since the star sport cars Porsche 917 and Ferrari 512, arguably the two most legendary sports prototypes ever conceived, were actually very short lived. The Porsche appeared in 1969, the Ferrari in 1970, and both were withdrawn at the end of 1971 (as official factory-cars that is). The 1970 edition of Le Mans was the only one the Ferrari appeared in. The Porsche 917 won the 1970 and 1971 editions, Porsche's first two overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. They would go on to become the most successful marque with 19 overall wins. The most recent was 2017. See more »

The Best Racing Film Ever
20 August 2005 | by See all my reviews

I am no great fan of Steve McQueen, but I am a great fan of auto racing. If you are too, this is the best auto racing film you will find (Yes, yes, I know - "Grand Prix". While Frankenheimer is fantastic at capturing the essence of cars in motion - see his "Ronin" in this regard as well - the surrounding movie is soap opera drivel.). If you aren't a hard core racing fan, this film will likely be a giant bore - there is no plot to speak of, and precious little dialog. What there is, is a documentary-like glimpse of sports car racing as it existed in the early 1970s. Watch it for the cars, and the drama inherent in the race, and you won't be disappointed.
