Sex & Nudity

  • Charles, who marries Rosy, is a very good man but a terrible lover. She is a virgin when they are married. The couple is shown having sex on their wedding night; however there is no nudity (they both wear old-fashioned nightshirts that cover them completely above the waist, and they don't remove them). There is no foreplay beyond ordinary mouth-to-mouth kissing in this scene, and the experience is not fulfilling for her, though presumably it is for him because he doesn't really know any better and is apparently completely innocent about how sensual sex can be. He is shown having an orgasm, though.
  • Randolph, the British soldier, and Rosy have an affair, and we see them making love in the woods. There is nudity and the experience is very sensual. We see one of her breasts. During their first encounter, she has an orgasm for the first time in her life - twice.
  • The local priest realizes that Rosy and Randolph are having an affair, and expresses his disapproval without actually talking about sex.

Violence & Gore

  • Randolph, depressed at the fact that his affair with Rosy has ended, kills himself offscreen by blowing himself up with dynamite.

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Randolph, a soldier, suffers from "shell shock", and he is overcome by tremors during his first scene at the pub. Rosy is there; this is where she first meets him. They share a passionate kiss, which stops the tremors.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • The women of the town come to believe that Rosy is an informer against the Irish because of her affair with Randolph, and as punishment, they gang up on her and shear off most of her hair.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The scene in which the townswomen gang up on Rosy is quite intense , and her father, who is the real informer, does nothing to stop it, knowing he'll be executed if he admits to what he has done.
