The first of three TV movie versions of the French play by Robert Thomas, Piège pour un Homme Seul (Trap for a Single Man); which itself was based on the Indian films Sesh Anka and Puthiya Paravai; which were inspired by the British film, Chase a Crooked Shadow. (The later TV movies, both American, were One of My Wives is Missing and Vanashing Act.) In this version, however, the would-be single man is a would-be single woman. Instead of man on honeymoon with his wealthy new wife, who disappeared after an argument and reappears - as an impostor; Janet Leigh is a woman on honeymoon with her wealthy new husband, who disappeared - but now an impostor is claiming to be her husband. She protests that this stranger is not her husband but his papers and identity photos are all in order. There is every indication that he is, indeed, the husband he claims to be. But he can't be. Can he? Written by Micheal McLoughlin

"That woman is mad, Inspector, very mad..."
7 August 2015 | by moonspinner55See all my reviews

American woman, just married in Europe and about to start her honeymoon at the Italian castle belonging to her new husband, awakens to discover she's apparently been abandoned; the sister of the missing spouse calls with a promise that her brother will return, however the man who comes back is an impostor. TV-made mystery, adapted from the play "Piege Pour un Homme Seul", is far-fetched and colorlessly staged but does benefit from a good cast, headed by Janet Leigh and Rossano Brazzi (terrific as the inspector on the case). The locations are visually dull, and the plot developments render much of the film's first half pointless (particularly the budding relationship between the stars). Leigh's exasperation is warranted, however her character as written isn't a convincing creation. Leigh is also not photographed well: her frowzy platinum hair and white outfits bleach out her natural beauty, while her pale skin and heavy mascara make her look like a junior-league Carol Channing.
