Storyline

A factory manager in rural Czechoslovakia bargains with the army to send men to the area, to boost the morale of his young female workers, deprived of male company since the local boys have been conscripted. The army sends reservists, mostly married middle-aged men - and the local beauty Andula, spurns those bold enough to try to win her, for the jazz pianist, newly come from Prague to perform. He seduces her and impresses her, telling her "most women are round, like guitars but you are a guitar by Picasso". Staying the night with him causes a lecture on a young woman's honour at her hostel so she throws over her other suitors and makes her way to Prague to find the young man. His protective Mamma and weary Pappa are not pleased when she arrives on the doorstep with her suitcase. Written by MK

Trivia

There are a number of cuts of this film, and it is impossible to know which one you are buying. The version in theatrical release in the US contained a sequence wherein Milda, the pianist, is tricked by a girl into climbing through a window into the bedroom of another couple, thinking he'll find her waiting for him. A version on videotape available in the US for many years cuts that sequence. The Czech DVD available now cuts that sequence and also cuts a sequence in which Milda tries to teach self-defense methods to Andulka in his room when they first meet in Zruc. See more »

Captivating, funny chronicle.
10 June 2008 | by Alex GriSee all my reviews

Very captivating movie, even though the story as such is not much. It has a very subtle and bitter-sweet humor attached to it and the character of the blond girl is deliciously seductive, in her innocent and naive behavior.

Most of the movie is made-up by a few very well executed scenes, rather than an elaborated story: the dancing hall scene, the musician's room scene, and the parents' house scene. Each of these brings forth both an emotion and a subtle humor.

The movie has one flaw, in my opinion: the sudden ending that gives the impression they ran out of budget before finishing... The ending does not add anything to the big picture, it just gives the impression the whole thing was only a chronicle of a few events in a girl's life.
