Dr. James Whitman is a psychiatrist at a major LA facility who shakes things up with newer techniques, like group therapy. Dr. Altman is his sometime mentor who helps him evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment.
Spielberg was 14 when he made this film. He put documentary footage of World War 2 with his own footage filmed at the Phoenix airport. Even though the plane was on the ground the whole time, he moved the camera to make it look like the plane was actually moving in the air and he would actually imitate the plane's motion. He is the master of "making you think something's happening."
