A young field administrator for the TVA comes to rural Tennessee to oversee the building of a dam on the Tennessee River. He encounters opposition from the local people, in particular a farmer who objects to his employment (with pay) of local black laborers. Goofs
The last part of the movie shows Fontana Dam. For some reason this picture has been reversed - the observation area is actually on the right of the dam not the left (creek side of dam). Also the last picture is not this dam. Fontana Dam is built straight where the last dam is curved. The curved dam is Calderwood Dam, the 2nd dam down the Little Tennessee River from Fontana Dam.

one of Kazan's greatest - if you can find it!

When I first saw this movie (at age 13) I was frustrated with the inept, impotent bureaucrat portrayed by Clift. The when I next saw it (age 16), I was vexed by his girl, who seemed to be too patient and wise. The third time (age 18) had me trying to take sides on this complex question - does the good for the many always trump the good for the few, or the one? And I was hooked on this complex, multi-layered drama - I'll see it again whenever and wherever I can. See it if you can find it. Although it's one of Kazan's best, and one of his favorites, it's STILL not in public distribution.
