In the waning days of World War II, the United States Navy cargo ship Reluctant and her crew are stationed in the "backwater" areas of the Pacific Ocean. Trouble ensues when the crew members are granted liberty.
The Gallant Hours depicts the crucial five-week period in October-November 1942 after Admiral Halsey took command of the beleaguered American forces in the South Pacific Area. That period of combat became a turning point in the struggle against the Japanese Empire during the World War II. The story is told in flashback, framed by Halsey's ceremony of going on inactive duty in 1947.Written by

For most of the movie Nimitz is shown as having the rank of a 3-star Vice Admiral. Nimitz never held that rank, he was promoted from a 2-star Rear Admiral directly to a 4-star Admiral on December 31, 1941. See more »
A very good film. Not a lot of typical war-movie action, but a film of considerable historic interest. A film made in documentary style and based closely on facts can certainly hold the viewer's attention, and this film does that extremely well. The only criticism I have concerns the one scene where Halsey sends his admiral's stars to the respective widows of Rear Admirals Scott and Callahan. It gives a somewhat insensitive impression that the two admirals died so that Admiral Halsey could receive his promotion to five-star Fleet Admiral. That, of course, was not the case. One of the many good aspects of this film is it's casting. Cagney is ideal for the role of Halsey, and Dennis Weaver thoroughly shines playing the part of Halsey's pilot.
