Trivia

Both of Gavin MacLeod's guest appearances on the series are tied to the storyline of Andy getting mentioned in a magazine article called "Sheriff Without a Gun". In The Andy Griffith Show: TV or Not TV (1965), he played a bank robber posing as a television producer, using the article as a cover to rob the Mayberry Bank. In The Andy Griffith Show: The Taylors in Hollywood (1965), he played an actor who is to portray Andy in a movie version of the article. See more »

Goofs

There are discrepancies as to how long Barney has been a Deputy Sheriff. In The Andy Griffith Show: Citizen's Arrest, Andy finds an old document that shows he issued Barney his first revolver 10 years ago. Barney even makes an issue about being on the force for 10 years when giving Gomer Pyle a ticket for an illegal U-turn. However, in The Andy Griffith Show: Barney's Physical, the point is made that he is celebrating his 5 year anniversary as a Deputy Sheriff and even receives a watch with "5" inscribed inside as a gift. Quotes

Barney Fife: Well, I guess to sum it up, you could say, there's three reasons why there's so little crime in Mayberry. There's Andy, and there's me, and
[patting gun]
Barney Fife: baby makes three.

Alternate Versions

During the CBS network run, the closing credits showed Andy and Opie walking back from their fishing trip. Opie drops the fish, and runs back to get them. One of the original sponsor's products (Sanka coffee, for instance) would appear in the corner of the screen. The syndicated reruns show a plain gray background (or blue, during the color years) with a drawing of the town square in the corner of the screen that once displayed the sponsor's product. Outstanding television
15 July 2001 | by AjtlawyerSee all my reviews

One of the finest TV shows ever, although I would recommend that viewers confine themselves only to the b&w episodes and skip the color episodes.

Every story had a moral, every story had gentle humor and the acting is first-rate. Barney Fife is one of TV's most memorable characters and some of his bits are hilarious no matter how many times you see them: "Welcome to Checkpoint Chickie!", Barney's agonizing attempt to recite the Preamble of the US Constitution from memory, Barney showing Ernest T. Bass how to enter a room and greet people at a party.

I defy anyone not to get choked up when watching "Opie the Birdman", first when Andy punishes Opie by making him listen to the cheeping baby birds whose mother Opie has killed, and then when Opie releases the now-grown sparrows.

The quintessential episode is "Man in a Hurry" where Charlotte businessman Malcolm Tucker finds himself stranded in Mayberry on a Sunday when it is totally impossible to get any work done. Tucker rails against Mayberry's snail pace but by the end of the episode, succumbs to it. It was the episode that introduced Gomer Pyle by the way.
