Sad, sad thing
21 February 2002 | by artzauSee all my reviews

Watching Flynn bumble and stumble through this abortion of a film is not embarrassing; it's sad to the point of being tragic. It appears that he is in a constant alcoholic fog as he lumbers his way through the god-awful script with a biggest bimbo ever to hit the screen. Beverly Aadland is merely terrible at her best. How Flynn ever got roped into this one will remain a mystery. There's no doubt he was washed up as a swashbuckle hero. But, his performance in the Roots of Heaven and The Sun Also Rises were classic demonstrations that he could act. I recall sitting in the same plaza in Pamplona in 1986 during San Fermines, drinking hot chocolate and eating churros after taking my son to see the running of the bulls and recalling the scene where Flynn takes out his last coin to pay for a shine. I was sitting in about the same place as that scene and I recalled how sad, truly sad that this parody of a film was the last of an actor who was truly one of the great ones. It is sad, sad-- truly sad that this crap was the final product of a long and exciting career.
