Fair-to-middling search for justice.

Van Johnson appears an odd choice to star in this rather dreary murder mystery as a Briton who was evacuated to live in the US during WWII. Some years later he decides to track down his father (Bernard Lee) and discovers that he was convicted of the murder of a young girl. Determined to get to the bottom of things, he goes back to Liverpool to investigate and to prove his dad's innocence. It's got quite a strong British supporting cast and with Jack Cardiff directing this AJ Cronin story, has some potential; sadly it is all a bit gloomy and predictable. Johnson's dialogue would suggest he'd never left Liverpool, much less lived in the USA for years and the script, in general, is far to stodgy to let the film flow.
