Sex & Nudity
- Several of the women have some cleavage showing. The two main characters kiss passionately. (They are not married). A threat of rape. (Nothing is shown and it does not happen.)
Violence & Gore
- Several uses of the "D" word. Also, as it is a movie about the days of slavery, the "N" word is used several times to describe blacks slaves.
Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking
- Use of alcohol throughout. Two different scenes have men in a drunken state.
Frightening & Intense Scenes
- Since this film takes place in 1850's Kentucky, slavery is a major matter in the plot. Slavery auctions, slavery around the plantations and the general demeaning attitude of the day is often evident. Terms such as "buck", "buck batter", "hot natured blacks","plantation negroes" etc. are used with regularity. A conversation with younger and less knowledgeable viewers would be helpful before the film to make them aware of the subject matter as certain scenes can be emotional and somewhat violent.
