Juhani Aho's original story- a Finnish feature movie first time in color
10 May 2011 | by Petey-10See all my reviews

This story takes place in some historical era.Juha is an elderly man who has a young wife called Marja. He loves her, but she longs for something else.Or someone else. And that someone else could be Shemeikka, who comes to the house. She decides to step into the boat with him.Life with him isn't what she imagined. She is surrounded by Shemeikka's former lovers. Then Marja gives birth to Shemeikka's son.But Juha still wants his wife back, and dramatic events are about to take place.Juha from 1956 is directed by Toivo Särkkä.I read the novel by Juhani Aho (1861-1921), written in 1911, just before I saw this movie. The movie doesn't quite manage to capture the spirit of the novel, but it still is a good movie experience.Eino Kaipainen gives a great performance in the lead as Juha.Elina Pohjanpää is amazing as Marja.Veikko Uusimäki is terrific as Uhtuan Shemeikka.Annie Mörk is very good as Juha's mother. And so is Kerstin Nylander as Shemeikka's mother.Assi Nortia is wonderful as Anja.Good work by Eila Pehkonen, who plays Kaisa. Also Armas Jokio and Kaarlo Wilska are also seen in the movie. The movie has a lot of good. It's built good, the way it moves into the dramatic events in the end. This movie was the first Finnish feature to be shot in CinemaScope format. So it also looks good, the Finnish nature in magnificent color. The story is worth reading and the movie worth watching.
