Injustices, small and great.
8 January 2020 | by brogmillerSee all my reviews

This film is counted among 'The hundred Italian films to be saved' and without wishing to be appear unkind I am mystified as to why. The colour is fabulous and everyone looks gorgeous but a film concerning mostly vain, idle and vacuous characters can only hold one's interest for so long. The script is okay by prolific screenwriter Rodolfo Sonego, with a little help from Charles Spaak but the score by Piero Morgan is disappointing and rather intrusive. The best moments by far come towards the end when the true nature of Annamaria's past is revealed and she is offered a second chance by a cynical, elderly billionaire which she wisely accepts. Martine Carol is of course a feast for the eye and her scenes with her daughter are touching. The excellent Raf Vallone is wasted here but every actor has to pay the bills. Considered 'daring' at the time it now seems rather tame and although focusing on the shallowness and hypocrisy of most of the characters, the film itself alas does not amount to much.
