When they shake off the meteorite that hits them right after they make contact with Earth, the ship is very pointed, is now dark gray with a star on it and the rocket engine is stopped.

Laird borrows one of Helen's cigarettes and places it on the dividing line between sunlight and darkness on the moon's surface, in order to show what would happen to anyone or anything that ventured onto the bright side. The cigarette immediately bursts into flame and disintegrates. First, people and objects suffer no adverse effects from sunlight on the moon. Second, since the moon has no atmosphere there could not be any smoke or flames from the cigarette.
