An English woman and her daughter enlist the aid of a cowboy to try and get their hardy hornless bull to mate with the longhorns of Texas, but have to overcome greedy criminals and the natural elements.
Howard Kemp is a bounty hunter who's been after killer Ben Vandergroat for a long time. Along the way, Kemp is forced to take on a couple of partners, an old prospector named Jesse Tate and a dishonorably discharged Union soldier, Roy Anderson. When they learn that Vandergroat has a $5000 reward on his head, greed starts to take the better of them. Vandergroat takes every advantage of the situation sowing doubt between the two men at every opportunity finally convincing one of them to help him escape.Written by
The movie is set in March of 1868; as denoted by the wanted poster and Lt. Roy Anderson's discharge papers; however the revolver used throughout the movie is the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army. Also the the rifle should be the Winchester Model 1866 "Yellow Boy" so named because of its yellow colored receiver; it is obviously a later model Winchester lacking the coloration. See more »
Why should you split the bounty? Can you get the money and the girl?
Anthony Mann directs one of the best filmed westerns ever. A bounty hunter(James Stewart) is on the trail of a murderer(Robert Ryan)who is headed toward California with a lovely younger woman(Janet Leigh). Along the way Stewart picks up the aid of an old prospector(Millard Mitchell)and a former soldier(Ralph Meeker). The prey is captured and bound and his cockiness causes the trio of bounty seekers to start turning on each other. A lot can happen on the way back to Kansas. Filmed in the Rocky Mountains, NAKED SPUR is one of the best cinematic westerns of its time. Stewart is pretty much Stewart, but I am more impressed with Ryans' attitude that almost steals the show. Very good story line, great scenery and expected thrills filmed in beautiful Technicolor.
