15 Electrifying Musical Performances from Hugh Hefner's Playboy After Dark
It’s difficult to find an aspect of popular culture that Hugh Hefner didn’t influence during his long, remarkable life. Spanning journalism, television, film, fashion and, of course, sexuality, his impact on music is one of the least heralded aspects of his legacy. Over the course of two seasons, Hefner used his weekly syndicated variety show, Playboy After Dark, as a platform for a broad spectrum of artists.

Psychedelic sounds from San Fransisco (courtesy of the Grateful Dead), early heavy metal (provided by Deep Purple), country-tinged balladeers (thanks to Linda Ronstadt and the Byrds) and old-school crooners (like the

This Is Your Death Review [SXSW 2017]

As on-the-nose cinematic warnings go, This Is Your Death is like a bright-red clown schnoz. Giancarlo Esposito directs a reality show gone suicidal, but it’s all with positive intent. Writers Noah Pink and Kenny Yakkel mean to affirm life, not death. Society is too obsessed with garbage “reality” shows and social white noise, corrupted by The Bachelor (women pitted like catty gladiators) and warped programming. Success is now monitored by viral appeal. Ex-con models who post slutty pictures 24/7 amass 2.5 million followers, while the youngest college graduate *ever* is known only by a few thousand. Esposito’s response to all this digital rot? Simple: turn it off.

Josh Duhamel stars as television host Adam Rogers, who becomes a national hero after saving one of his Married To A Millionaire contestants during an unexpected murder/suicide finale. Rogers’ network positions him as a hero, but that doesn’t cleanse the blood from his own hands.

Combat movies fascinate this reviewer — if you look at the Savant review index you’ll see that I review practically every war picture of note that I can get my hands on. But brace yourself — I become huffy when I see themes of patriotism and faith used to deliver dicey messages.

Mel Gibson’s big, slick WW2 combat film Hacksaw Ridge tells the truly inspiring story of combat medic Desmond Doss, the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor and the only one to

Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 9 Review: Profiling 202

  • TVfanatic
David Rossi, profiling god.

That's the central theme of Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 9.

Oh yeah, the Bau also makes some progress on the escaped serial-killer front.

The occasion this episode is the FBI's brightest young minds coming together to learn from the agency elder.

Or, to put it another way, "The Art of Psychological War" by David Rossi.

It was fun to see scenarios suggested by the seminar participants being acted out by the Bau members, at least in animation, as Rossi gruffly corrects them.

It's understandable that Rossi is tense.

First, it's his birthday, and he's not getting any younger. Second, every year serial killer Tommy Yates gives him a present: the name and location of one of his many kills.

To further complicate things, Yates is one of the few escaped serial killers still on the loose. So to taunt Rossi further, he's feeding him the location of fresh,

Abigail Spencer Talks Timeless Reveals, Jon Hamm's Note About the '60s — Plus, Rectify's 'Very Emotional' Finish
Since late October, Abigail Spencer has been in that special “zone” actors rarely enter, where they’re starring in two series airing simultaneously. On NBC’s Timeless, she plays Lucy Preston, a history professor enlisted for a series of daring trips through time, while on Sundance’s Rectify, she plays Amantha, a onetime murder suspect’s sister, who’s been on a wild journey of her own.

With Timeless about to unspool its final two episodes of the fall (Mondays at 10/9c, before breaking until Jan. 16) and Rectify entering its final two weeks ever, TVLine spoke with Spencer about her very distinct,

Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 9 Review: You Haven't Done Nothin'

  • TVfanatic
Like the collapse of a building, Alex's life is crumbling around him.

Just as he was getting ready to face the court on Grey's Anatomy Season 13 Episode 9, Jo finally told Alex her secret. The reveal prompted him to turn into hero mode real quick.

Elsewhere in the episode, Richard learned he was being replaced, and Owen's marriage took a turn for the worse.

Alex has grown immensely since we first met him as an arrogant, selfish intern. He's a caring doctor, a loving partner, and a great friend. Despite his sardonic comments, Alex ultimately tries to do the right thing, even at the expense of himself.

He was ready for whatever outcome the court would decide. However, Jo's confession set him on a course that he may not be able to come back from.

Realizing that she would have to testify, Jo worried her abusive husband would be able

'Grey's Anatomy': Alex Makes a Costly Decision About His Future After Jo's Big Bombshell

'Grey's Anatomy': Alex Makes a Costly Decision About His Future After Jo's Big Bombshell
Warning: Spoiler alert! Do not proceed if you haven't watched Thursday's Grey's Anatomy fall finale.

Alex Karev's life is crumbling before his very eyes.

On Thursday's fall finale of Grey's Anatomy, the suspended Grey-Sloan Memorial pediatric surgeon made a costly decision about his future that would dramatically stall his personal and professional lives.

With a trial beginning the next day for his assault case over beating up his fellow doctor, Andrew DeLuca, Alex made the decision -- to Meredith's many objections -- to take a plea deal. The result of such a decision meant Alex would be going to prison for two years, though it's unclear if he actually will go through with it. Darn cliffhangers!

8 powerfully effective voice-overs in modern movies

facebook

twitter

google+

Sometimes funny, often poignant, narration can be hugely effective when deployed successfully. Ryan picks a few great examples...

“God help you if you use voice-over in your work my friends! God help you. That’s flaccid, sloppy writing. Any idiot can use narration to explain the thoughts of a character.”

So says screenwriting coach Robert McKee in Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman’s 2002 film, Adaptation. Well, not the real screenwriting coach Robert Mckee, but the one played in superbly aggressive style by actor Brian Cox, who stomps about on stage at a writing seminar like an angry bull. Brilliantly, McKee’s condemnation of voice-overs interrupts the interior thoughts, as narrated by Nicolas Cage’s fictionalised version of Charlie Kaufman - a terminally anxious screenwriter with an Everest-sized case of writer’s block.

It’s an example of the quirky, hall-of-mirrors kind of humour that courses through Adaptation,

Matt Damon is officially a certified pirate. During Friday morning's commencement exercises at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Damon, the keynote speaker, received an "MIT Pirate Certificate" from school President Rafael Reif - a cheeky nod to his role as a self-described space pirate in the hit 2015 film The Martian. "Usually, you can only receive this certificate from MIT's Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation," Reif told Damon and the more than 2,800 undergraduate and graduate members of the class of 2016, before referencing Damon's character in the film. His plan to convince Sam to say, “Yes,” begins with a nostalgic “This is your life, Sam Winchester!” journey through moments from the hunter’s past. (It’s a clever use of “flashbacks” and features welcome appearances from Colin Ford as young Sam and old footage of Adam, but I really didn’t need to be reminded of the Amelia/”I hit a dog” arc.)

Despite Lucifer’s reasoning that in order to defeat The Darkness,

The X Factor Final 2015: as it happened

Reggie N Bollie v Louisa Johnson. Only one could be crowned X Factor champion 2015, but who?

10.03pm GMT

Anyway, that’s it. Louisa Johnson has won X Factor 2015, which means this is probably the last X Factor liveblog I’ll ever write. I might change my mind, or be coerced into returning next year, but right now this really feels like the end of something. I realise this means I’ll miss Louisa’s triumphant return to X Factor next year, which will be her first of three televised appearances before she disappears forever, but I’m sure we’ll all survive.

In which case, thanks again for all the support, everyone. You guys have been great. Now, please do the decent thing and turn your televisions off.

10.02pm GMT

Unfortunately Harry Styles didn’t run onstage and tell Louisa about all the pussy she’ll get now, but I’m sure he wanted to.
