During the opening scene in the graveyard, one of the characters references "Flaming Youth." This is a reference to F. Scott Fitzgerald's essay "Echoes of the Jazz Age" in which he asserts that Flaming Youth (1923) was the only film that captured the sexual revolution of the Jazz Age. At the time this film was made in 1949, the latter film was still extant. Sadly, it is now lost. See more »

During the World War I hotel room scene between Major Jay Gatsby and Klipspringer in Kentucky, Klipspringer suggests finding a speak-easy to have an illegal drink. However, no form of Prohibition against Alcohol was in effect in Kentucky until 1919. See more »
This is a pretty good movie that seems to be lost. It contains possible Alan Ladd's fine performance, and is far better than the vapid 1974 remake with Redford.
