Storyline
Plot Summary |
On the success of his latest and most elaborate Broadway musical "Show Boat", Composer Jerome Kern (Robert Walker) reminisces to his chauffeur about his life that led to this point. He talks about: his long time friendship with arranger James I. Hessler (Van Heflin), who, in large part, helped him hone his craft, and who wanted to get out of arranging, to focus on composing serious music; how he overcame the mentality of the time of Broadway producers of featuring the English music halls revues; how he met an English country lass named Eva Leale (Dorothy Patrick), who would become Mrs. Kern; his near death experience in almost boarding the ill-fated Lusitania sailing, the liner which was ultimately torpedoed and sank on that sailing; his longtime friendship with Hessler's daughter, Sally Hessler (Lucille Bremer), whose want, as an adult, to be a Broadway performer led to a certain estrangement; and the specific events that led to the creation of "Show Boat" with lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II (Paul Langton). With the advent of talking pictures, Kern's music, existing songs, as well as new songs, written expressly for, would hit a broader audience through Hollywood movies. Written by Huggo |

Did You Know?
Trivia | When M-G-M asked Jerome Kern what he thought about Robert Walker portraying him, Kern said it was fine but wanted to hear his wife's opinion. He phoned her from the studio and she told him to stay there, portray himself and send Walker home to her. See more » |
Goofs | When Kern goes to see Sally at Club Elite in Memphis, he hasn't written Show Boat yet. Therefore, it would be before 1927. However, the song she performs with Van Johnson, "I Won't Dance", wasn't written by Kern until 1935. See more » |

Crazy Credits | [Scrolling Prologue] This story of Jerome Kern is best told in the bars and measures, the quarter notes and grace notes of his own music - - that music that sings so eloquently his love of people, love of country, love of life. We who have sung it and will sing it to our children can only be grateful that he gave his life to music - - and gave that music to us. On December 27, 1927, the curtain went up on the most exciting night of his life - the opening of his immortal "Show Boat." And there we join him - See more » |
