According to John Ford's biography 'The Unquiet Man' by Dan Ford, Darryl F. Zanuck dropped John Ford's proposed remake of his silent film 'Four Sons'. Zanuck cancelled after some preliminary script work had been done and when he learnt of the similarly themed The Mortal Storm (1940) had gotten the green light at MGM. As such, John Ford, "Still upset over Zanuck's cancellation of 'Four Sons' decided not to present 'The Long Voyage Home' to him." Ford instead offered it to producer Walter Wanger who was a producer "who might appreciate a work of this caliber." Wanger soon after gave Ford the green light to make the film. See more »
Newspapers in those days took a long time to typeset by hand and so are compiled and printed at night for early edition delivery to readers, so it would be impossible for a ship that departed the night before to be in the headlines as torpedoed in the morning. This expresses a great sadness about the lives of men at sea. Some are doomed to stay forever. One of the goals of the movie is to finally get John Wayne, an innocent Swedish man, off the boats and home to his old mother. It paints such a bleak picture you really root for him, even with Wayne's horrible performance. It goes right for the heartstrings. There's a great performance by Ian Hunter as the fellow who mainly keeps to himself. He has a secret past, and they suspect he's a spy. This one of John Ford's least self-conscious movies, there's no heavy Americana to deal with and he directs you to the heart of the story and the often drunken emotions of the sailors. **** out of ****
