A Hilarious Amateur Hour
30 April 2018 | by VimaconeSee all my reviews

Tex Avery was really honing his comic sensibility in his late 1938 releases. He was more interested in this than in developing characters. In fact, he held all his characters in contempt and this gem is a prime example of that.

This short features a number of characters competing for first prize in an amateur hour contest. Avery had previously parodied this type of contest in I LOVE TO SINGA (the opera bird from the said short makes a return appearance here). Almost every moment contains a hilarious gag at the expense of the character in the scene. The proto-Elmer serves as a running gag constantly interrupting the announcer or subject the execution of a sight gag. Like many of his appearances, he is the glue that holds everything together and closes the short with an unexpected outcome.

The gag of with the one-man-band conductor could be a reference to the fact that Avery himself was a one-man-band as a filmmaker throughout his career. His colleagues stated that he was a perfectionist, but gave due credit to everyone who worked with him. Avery voices the obnoxious hippo in the audience.

This is one of Avery's best WB cartoons. It's filled to the brim with over-the-top, outrageous gags. A must-see
