First of the torrid 'haystack' romances of this director: book adaptation of riverside philanderer who finds out what's good for the goose .. eventually
31 March 2017 | by BofsensaiSee all my reviews

This is the first in a string of what this director cornered the market in what became known as 'haystack' torrid romances genres in the home country of Finland. This one though is an adaptation of famed Johannes Linnankoski's novel (adapted by Yrjö Kivimies) and surely sought out to be filmed by this director as it tells of a theme he seemed to want to return to many times, the 'wanderings' of a logger and his philandering ways with the women who fall into his charm and embrace down the riversides, but should a hint of prior carnal knowledge appertain to the one he deigns is the right one to take as his bride, then the man will go to complete jealous betrayed pieces - (at least in those days of just before the Finnish version of the second world war involvement broke out!)

In other words, another tale of what is NOT good for the goose can never be good for the gander, either, in that pre-war patriarchal world: this is a theme the director returned to constantly. At least in this one, the philandering anti-hero is played real well by classic (sorta silent era like) handsomeness Kaarlo Oksanen - (as he would do again for some others, before tragically killed in the second half of that country's war) - all flashing teeth and doff of his hat charming insouciance.

Then, besides the accompanying string of Finn countryside beauties who eventually become either with stork offering, good-time gals (surely not whores - although in time it is this that is most certainly a recurring theme of the director's), even somehow quasi tough suited / hearted (ooh, smoking - and lighting her own cigarette, no less) woman (Brigit Nuortio) who gives the soon to become standard (recurring in Tulio's films all the way up to his last, almost exactly the same in 'Sensuela') 'men are only after one thing, but all we women want is love' tirade, you also get rare appearance by a one Rakel Linnanheimo, sister to Regina who would next become his go to regular leading lady thereafter. (She was contracted out to another studio at this time.)

So if you like handsome (over lipsticked!) classically handsome guys bedding (only inferred: it was pre-war) country wenches, but who gets his comeuppance so that (WARNING: plot spoiler alert here= read no further) his own wedding night is f**cked up (or rather not not F..., if you follow?), this is the one for you. Otherwise, avoid like you should those shallow philandering good for nothing heartthrobs!

Oh, forgot to add: it is in this one that the original almost documentary style recording of loggers shooting the rapids is sourced from: anti-hero Olavi is a master single log rider and there are several long spectacular shots of - well, some superb guy, doing it all: it's obviously not Kaarlo, so it's pity that this impressive stunt man/men name(s) were not credited at those times and so lost to posterity for the rightful feat recognition they should have got.
