Storyline

A small town agricultural fair is giving a prize for the largest home grown product. Porky sets to work planting a garden; his neighbor tries a feed mix for his chickens. But the chickens won't eat the feed, so he sets them loose in Porky's garden (one eats some spinach and does a Popeye impression). Porky rescues a pumpkin that they missed and takes it to the fair. The neighbor's chickens eat a huckster's reducing pills on the way in, and just as they are winning first prize, reduce back to eggs, and Porky wins. Written by Jon Reeves <jreeves@imdb.com>

Trivia

Alternate Versions

This cartoon was colorized in 1968 by having every other frame traced over onto a cel. Each redrawn cel was painted in color and then photographed over a colored reproduction of each original background. Needless to say, the animation quality dropped considerably from the original version with this method. The cartoon was colorized again in 1992, this time with a computer adding color to a new print of the original black and white cartoon. This preserved the quality of the original animation. A Porky Favorite from Tex
29 May 2016 | by ja_kitty_71See all my reviews

Here is another favorite Porky Pig cartoon from 1937 after seeing it for the first time on YouTube. The cartoon was directed by Tex Avery, and it was his last one until "Porky's Preview" from 1941.

The story goes that Porky and a stereotypical Italian chicken farmer compete for the price for "Largest Home Grown Product" at the County Fair. The farmer tried putting vitamins and supplements in the feed; but his chickens wouldn't go for it. Since he wasn't going to play fair, the farmer let's his chicken brood loose on Porky's garden to feast upon.

I love it when a chick morphs into a Popeye look-alike after he ate spinach; then gave a bully chicken his/her comeuppance. I also love how Porky fends off the chickens save a pumpkin, like in a football game. So anyway, I like this Porky short and give it 7 stars.
