Storyline

A circular story, told in flashback, in which eternal repetition is only interrupted by death in the form of a relentlessly linear railway engine. The film opens at a railway crossing where a man is about to kill his wife when the narrative spins into the past via a song. The central story is of the unhappy love affair between Kasturi, the Harijan (Untouchable) daughter of the railway level-crossing guard Dukhia, and Pratap, the Brahmin son of the grocer Mohan. At first, rumor and mob violence are deployed to lethal effect in order to maintain a 'traditional', oppressive morality. Later, when the main protagonists are about to conform and marry selected partners, rumor and maliciousness again intervene to trigger renewed violence until the on-rushing train of fate stops the strife. A solid love story between a bramhin boy and an untouchable girl within the backdrop of Indias caste system which separated the couple.
7 January 2013 | by See all my reviews

It is monumental task to write a review of a movie made seventy seven years earlier when there was no Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Madhubala and so on. But when I put myself in that age when Madhubala was probably four years old, I find Achyut Kanya a classic of a movie. The story based on India's famed caste system where Pratap(Ashok Kumar) and Kasturi ( Devika Rani) comes from the two ends of the society and fall in love. Both Ashok Kumar and Rani acted very well and their dialogues are very well written. The story has a very strong foundation and the uproar due to this uncommon courtship between Pratap and Kasturi was very well depicted. This was Ashok Kumar's first film and set the stage for a very long career with hundreds of films to his credit. Devika Rani was the first actress to play a part and was responsible for making careers for stars like Dilip Kumar and Madhubala. Overall I was very pleased with the movies and gave it a nine out of ten considering the fact that this was made in the year 1936.
