Am I the only one who finds most Christmas movies hypocritical? They spend tens of millions on lavish productions, recreating Santa's workshop or some such, all to tell us that Christmas is not about material things but about simple pleasures. It's enough to make you long for the homespun, slightly threadbare charms of a classic Christmas movie, like "Meet Me in St. Louis," released 70 years ago this week (on November 22, 1944).

People remember the film for its radiant Judy Garland performance and its classic songs, but it's also worth noting that the family portrayed here is not always prosperous and happy. For all that it is, I enjoyed Rise of the Guardians as a film that offers a twist to the iconic holiday and mythological characters adults tell their children about, and does so in a way that doesn't taint what attracts us to these characters in the first place. This isn't to say you should expect anything too far outside the norm from a storytelling perspective, but the fact it's based on the book by William Joyce, whose magical animated short film The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore won the Oscar last year, should give some allusion to the imagination that inspired it into being. Cheryl Ladd is living proof that one of Charlie's Angels also can be Mrs. Santa Claus.

Soon after the classic female-detective show's "Complete Series" DVD release, the actress plays Father Christmas' spouse as Disney's direct-to-video offering "Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups" debuts Tuesday (Nov. 20). The title dogs talk, thanks to a voice cast that includes Richard Kind ("Argo") and Tom Everett Scott ("That Thing You Do!"), but it's hard to steal a movie totally from a Ladd clad as Mrs. Claus.

"I loved the script," she tells Zap2it, "and when I met with the producers, they kind of looked at me and said, 'You know, you're a little out-of-the-box.'
