Storyline

Bill Whipple is a happy-go-lucky mechanic for MacDonald who thinks that he is the worlds greatest driver and lover. Mac has treated Bill like a son since he took him in. One day at the track, Bill sees Pat Bannon, and tries his best to impress her, but to no avail. On his way to catch a flight, he tricks Pat into taking him to the airport and she gets even by taking him up in a plane. He hates to fly, but will not show her that he is afraid and when the plane breaks up, he is a hero for rescuing her. This gets him publicity and Renny offers him his car to drive in the Indianapolis 500. Bill breaks with Mac to drive the car and puts it on the pole for the race. Then Renny double crosses Bill and plans to drive the car himself since Bill has tuned it so well. Written by Tony Fontana <tony.fontana@spacebbs.com>

Trivia

When Haines's character arrives at the airport, Ford Tri-Motor airplanes operated by Maddux Air Lines are prominently featured. Maddux Air Lines operated in Southern California during the late '20s with hubs in San Diego (Lindbergh Field) and Los Angeles (Mines Field, later renamed Los Angeles International Airport). The airport scene was likely filmed at Mines Field in L.A. except LAX doesn't have hills around it. Perhaps Metropolitan in Glendale would be more likely. See more »

William Haines Races to the Finish
26 May 2011 | by See all my reviews

Boastful race-car enthusiast William Haines (as William "Bill" Whipple) works for mentor driver Ernest Torrence (as Jim "Mac" MacDonald), who has been trying to win the Indianapolis 500 since its inception in 1911. When Mr. Torrence is sidetracked due to a weak heart, Mr. Haines enters the race, along with mechanic pal Karl Dane (as Dugan) and rival John Miljan (as Lee Renny). Haines also romances beautiful Anita Page (as Patricia "Pat" Bonner), who helps teach him a lesson. This is your typical Haines vehicle. It is most notable as one of MGM's last silent features, and includes actual Indy 500 location footage. "Speedway" has Haines and the MGM crew in good form, but the silent era was ending. After Greta Garbo's successful "The Kiss" appeared in November, all the big stars were being heard.
