Harry's Second Hal Roach Comedy
7 May 2020 | by bobliptonSee all my reviews

This rarely seen Harry Langdon comedy has Thelma Todd and Eddie Dunn crash landing on an iceberg. Eddie seems to have done it on purpose, so he can be alone with Thelma. Of course Harry is along too, but when you're with Langdon, you're both alone.

The reason this one is rarely seen is because the sound track was originally recorded on disc, and Roach did not spring for a conversion to sound-on-film when he was doing that in the middle and late 1930s. Happily, Richard Roberts and Kit Parker have sprung for titles and a score for the dvd collection HARRY LANGDON AT HAL ROACH: THE TALKIES 1929-1930.

Harry's work at Roach often gets a bad rap, but I agree with Mr. Roberts' assertion that they are quite good, a continuation of his stage-honed silent character, He's got Charley Rogers as the direction, he's got George Stevens as his cameraman, he's got H.M. Walker credited for the writing. Well, Walker was credited with writing everything at Roach in this period. But there are a couple of amusing gags, and Harry is his usual alien self.
