Storyline

Ollie is a love-struck private who is drilled by his unsympathetic lieutenant at reveille. The colonel of the regiment wants his daughter to marry the lieutenant but she has her heart set on the chubby-faced Hardy, who himself is in love with another woman. He is thrown into a cell for disobeying orders, where he later escapes with the assistance of his sweetheart, and a casual touch of assault when he bumps the guard with his large stomach. The final chase scene ends with everyone getting what they want. Written by Lord Heath @ http://www.lordheath.com/index.php?p=1_297_Love-And-Duty

If this was the US Army in 1916, heaven help us!

"Love and Duty" is an Oliver Hardy film that was made, of all places, in Jacksonville, Florida. While few would know it today, Jacksonville was a film capital before Hollywood...though studios only remained there a few years.

The story set in the US Army...which is odd, since one of the 'soldiers' appears to be about 80 and Oliver Hardy is incredibly fat in this film. It doesn't make much sense...nor does the actual plot. Hardy is a screw-up who somehow has a nice girl fall for him. He gets locked up in the brig and the girl helps him escape...which isn't a funny scario...it might get a soldier shot!!

Overall, a real dud....even for 1916.
