One day while going through the county prison, a professor of a nearby college pauses outside one of the cells, asks one of the respectable-looking inmates what had brought him to his low estate. Peter, having talked to no one for many days, told the professor all. "One day I saw the stenographer from the office next door and she made eyes at me. I flirted back. Then she became offended. Not noticing this, I kept up the flirtation and she, in anger, told me that her fiancé, Bill Murphy, was laying for me.
