Trivia
The first film to be banned in Sweden when it was made in 1912. Considered lost, a print was found in the US in 1979, and was released in Sweden in 1980, then rated "approved for all ages".

Alternate versions
The original version featured a scene where the father rapes his daughter and was thus banned in Sweden. The film was considered lost until a censored American print was discovered in 1979.

The Gardener review

The first of 10 collaborations between Victor Sjostrom (who also has a part in the film) and Mauritz Stiller sees Lili Beck as the daughter of a gardener whose love for her employer's son leads to tragedy. Banned in its native Sweden for decades, and believed lost until a (sadly incomplete) print was found in 1979, it's lurid stuff with rape, eviction, prostitution and more all awaiting our heroine. For all its melancholy bitterness, however, it is a beautifully shot film featuring some lovely locations.
