    Strange for 1912
    The Grocery Clerk's Romance (1912)

    ** 1/2 (out of 4)

Considering the era, this here is a pretty bizarre little film from Mack Sennett. A husband (James C. Morton) is constantly being lazy and overworking his wife so a grocery clerk (Ford Sterling) comes to the rescue by giving her a break in the work. The man's real motive is to have the husband killed so that he can then marry the widow. THE GROCERY CLERK'S ROMANCE is a pretty strange film and this here is what makes it worth viewing. For 1912 I was a little surprised to see such a subject matter but the story was pretty funny because the woman is about to marry this guy just minutes after learning her husband was dead. I won't ruin the outcome of the movie but I must admit that I was a little confused by the whole thing. Still, Sennett's direction really hits the mark as he keeps the action moving at a very good pace and I think the actors all do fine work as well. There really aren't any major laughs to be had but this doesn't hurt the film too bad as it remains watchable from start to finish.
