Bad, but a fun bad!
28 December 2002 | by Aaron1375See all my reviews

Italians back in the day knew how to make a cheap horror film. It may be a bad film overall, but it could also be a fun film to watch. This one fits the bill as it is pretty bad, but it is also a pretty fun watch. Lots of zombies, lots of gore and it goes by at a pretty fast pace. The only thing it was missing was some nudity, but honestly, none of the females in this film looked like they would have a decent chest region anyways so I do not think we are missing much there. This film is a zombie film set on an island and they could have titled it, "Zombie Island Massacre"; however there is a movie with that title and it quite frankly it was boring and literally featured like a minute of an actual zombie. It was also not made by the Italians! No, they crafted something that may not be something one could classify as a good movie, but it was a fun watch!

The story starts out thrusting viewer right into the action as a group of scientists have a confrontation with a witch doctor who is angry at the group and blames them for the death of his daughter. So, he has risen the dead to take revenge and sent his wife to hell so that she too may return from the dead and take revenge upon the scientist. They kill the witch doctor, but his wife does rise and she goes on one heck of a kill spree! In fact, I would say it is the best portion of the film. We witness a little girl running away and how she got off the island is none of our business, but she returns along with five other people and they somehow get stranded on the island. Meanwhile, a group of three idiots are traversing the island to try and figure out the mystery of what happened to the scientists even though what happened 20 years prior and none of them look old enough to really have any stake in what happened. They accidentally raise the dead and soon one of the three meets up with the other group and they must try and survive the endless wave of zombies!

The film does feature a lot of good gore and one cannot complain too much about the zombie action. It is when you think about the story that it becomes a bit horrible. The group that gets stranded are in a little boat and we never learn what the heck they are doing. There are two girls and four guys, the girls don't seem to be any of the guys girlfriends and the guys are apparently mercenaries. How did the hook up and why? None of our business. You also have to watch a guy leave the safety of a structure to go after the zombies kind of like the guy in "Hell of the Living Dead" did, except he was less effective. You also get to see a guy pick up a book and say, "It's the book of the dead" and the book literally has in English on the cover, "Book of Death". I just found that funny as you expect it to be in another language or called something else, not in a very plain writing, "Book of Death".

So yeah, this film is bad, but I enjoyed it for what it was. I thought it was a better film that Lucio Fulci's Zombie 3, the film that had absolutely no idea what it wanted to be, because at least this one was consistent. Zombies that are risen by voodoo are on the attack! Unlike that one that seemed to have the most inconstant zombies in the history of zombie films. Speaking of Zombie 3, this film would be packaged as Zombie 4: After Death, even though it was not really part of that series, though once again, it seems more in line with Lucio's first Zombie film than did three. What is kind of also funny is that the film that would be packaged as Zombie 5: Killing Birds was made in 1987...two years prior to the film that was supposedly the fourth film! Of the three, this is by far the best; of course, that is not really saying much.
