Death of a Unicorn
If reactions from the crowds at SXSW this year were any indication, A24 and first-time director Alex Scharfman have a hit on their hands with Death of a Unicorn. Making its world premiere in Austin, the film is a surprisingly conventional mashup of satire and monster horror, but it elevated by the comedic chops of the ensemble cast. Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega star as a father and daughter whose weekend retreat gets complicated when they hit and kill an actual unicorn. Things go from bad to worse when their hosts realize unicorns contain healing properties and are bent on exploiting the creatures. Richard. E. Grant, Téa Leoni, and Anthony Carrigan costar, but the biggest laughs come from Will Poulter, showing off his underutilized knack for comedy.
In theaters Friday, March 28
