    • San Gottardo (1977)

      7. San Gottardo

      19771h 30m
      6.7 (12)
San Gottardo is first and foremost a film about emigration, the exodus brought about by the construction of the two tunnels - the railway tunnel (1872-1882) and the road tunnel (1969-1976). People migrated from one country to another, from one civilization to another, and different social mores and customs were confronted with one another. The film takes place between the unveiling of two monuments: it begins with the unveiling of the monument dedicated to the tunnel workers in Airolo, and it ends with the unveiling of the Escher monument on the Zurich Bahnhofstrasse. In between the two unveiling, the film depicts the essence of that which lay behind the veiling cloth.

    • Pédra. Un reporter sans frontières (2006)

      10. Pédra. Un reporter sans frontières

      20061h 1m
The photographer Jean-Pierre Pedrazzini was born in Paris in 1927, to parents from Locarno. Emigrating with his parents to Switzerland in 1943, he starts taking photographs in Davos. By the end of the war, he is taking up a job offer with Paris Match, and beginning his short career as a photojournalist. Little more than a decade later, while capturing enduring images of the Budapest uprising of 1956, he is fatally injured. I meet people who shared his reportage, trips and adventures: photographers Russ Melcher, Willy Rizzo, Franz Goess, Benno Graziani and Erich Lessing. And I speak to his colleague Mario De Biasi, present in 1956 on Republic Square in Budapest when Jean-Pierre Pedrazzini falls under a hail of bullets on the Battle of the AVO headquarters. I visit Dominique Lapierre, too, with whom Jean-Pierre Pedrazzini published a book about the trip that they did through the USSR in early 1956, accompanied by their wives: at that time a first. In Tbilisi I meet the surgeon Georgi Mossechvili who hosted the two French couples during their trip. The film broadens our perspective on Pedrazzini's work, exploring not only drama of the famous Budapest pictures, but the full scope of his earlier work which led him there.

    • Walker Renzo Ferrari (2004)

      14. Walker Renzo Ferrari

      200433mShort
This film on Renzo Ferrari is not a biography, but rather a kind of biographic spy, based on hints found in his paintings, like associations, objects, sculptures, shadows and signs. The paintings selected for this production are from his 2000-2003 collection and are rich in strong socio-political references, from migrants and their countries to multi-ethnic elements and peculiar characters, like Gaio, who is neither man nor woman. No experts, no friends, no critics, just his paintings and the visual and sound elements they express. I have known Renzo Ferrari for decades and have followed his exhibits in Ticino and in Northern Italy. The perspective chosen for this film is that of a fiction novel, a biographical journey through Renzo Ferrari's paintings. The film shows the areas in Milan (Italy) where Renzo Ferrari lives. It shows his atelier, small drawings in his agenda, scribbled notes in his diary, but also the forest around Cadro (near Lugano, Switzerland), his outdoor Bateau-Lavoir, with curtains swaying in the wind, his small atelier in Ticino. I also used some archive material, photographies, excerpts from other films and newspapers, and posters from past exhibits. All this is mixed together with sound material, with African music - which he often listens to when at work - with quotations from films and of sentences in French, literature, philosophy and arts history, sounds from the subway in Milan and from New York; cities, which have much inspired him. Renzo Ferrari is a "border" artist.
    • Il sergente dell'altopiano - La storia di Mario Rigoni Stern (2022)

      15. Il sergente dell'altopiano - La storia di Mario Rigoni Stern

      202252m
A journey between present and past, full of testimonies and reflections to recount the writer Mario Rigoni Stern (1921-2008) on the occasion of the centenary of his birth. Over the course of a day, from dawn to starry night, Stern's voice recalls the years of war and imprisonment. The Alpine soldiers' sergeant, who returned home, became in time the guardian of the Asiago plateau and his homeland takes on the value of a world to be preserved against wars and indifference. Leading the narration of the documentary is the voice of the writer himself, recorded on many occasions throughout his life. Starting with the last years and travelling backwards, the writer recalls the war, imprisonment and the return home, ending at the time of the publication of 'Sergeant in the Snow' (1953), the book that marked the beginning of his career. To respect this personal narrative, we sought out testimonies from the writer's private life. This includes friends from the theatre, film and music, as well as people associated with collaborations of which the writer left documentation. Symbolically, the story takes place over the course of a day on the Asiago Plateau, from dawn to starry night. In fact, many locations in the Asiago basin that Stern used to frequent, from the historic center of Asiago to the Marcésina plain to Mount Zebio, are portrayed in the different seasons. But among the archive material and footage shot for the occasion, other places in the story take us to Val d'Aosta, where young Mario's adventure as an Alpine soldier began in 1938. And then to Albania and Russia where he fought and experienced the harsh retreat of the ARMIR. Finally in Austria, at the Präbichl pass, in search of the Lager where he put his notes in order and resumed writing the 'Sergeant' and in Switzerland, in Val Bavona, a place emblematic of his ideal relationship between man and nature.
