Craggy Irish-American James Naughton, a handsome charmer and solid character lead of crime stories, is best-known for his strong, cynical work on the musical stage. He firmly moved into films and especially TV roles, however, thanks to his Tony Award-winning Broadway success. A post-war baby and the older brother of actor David Naughton, the Connecticut native was born on December 1, 1945, the son of a pair of school teachers. Jim developed a taste for singing during his years performing at high school events.
Following studies at Brown University and the Yale School of Drama, Jim made his off-Broadway debut in 1971 for his pungent portrayal of "Edmund" in "Long Day's Journey Into Night," for which he received a Theatre World Award. his Broadway debut with "I Love My Wife" in 1977, followed by "Whose Life Is It Anyway?" in 1980.
In the early 70's he made a strong impression in the TV movie version of the play Look Homeward, Angel (1972) starring Timothy Bottoms and followed that with a featured role in the acclaimed college dramedy The Paper Chase (1973) also starring Bottoms. This led to a brief, co-starring role opposite veteran Dan Dailey in the short-lived father/son detective TV series Faraday and Company (1973), which was one of a rotating series of four programs comprising "The NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie," and as astronaut Pete Burke in the equally short-lived TV series version of Planet of the Apes (1974). In the meantime he also found guest roles on such crime series as "Mannix," "Joe Forrester" and "Barnaby Jones."
Jim continued diligently with work on TV throughout the 80s starring in three more quickly canceled TV programs -- as a high school dean in Making the Grade (1982); an emergency room team lead in the medical drama Trauma Center (1983); and a single dad raising a daughter in Raising Miranda (1988). He also had a light recurring role as Judith Light's ex-husband in the sitcom Who's the Boss? (1984). His smooth voice has often been heard on national TV commercials and in radio spots. He is provided narration on PBS television's Nature series.
JIm received bookend Tony Awards for his "Sam Spade"-like detective in the 1989 film noir musical "City of Angels" (1990) and as slick, shyster lawyer/razzle dazzler "Billy Flynn" in the revival of "Chicago" (1997). He would also direct such stage plays as Arthur Miller's "The Price" and Thornton Wilder's "Our Town" with Paul Newman and Jane Curtin.
Sporadic, often restrained work in such films as the Stephen King horror opus Cat's Eye (1985), The Glass Menagerie (1987) (as the "Gentleman Caller"), The Good Mother (1988), First Kid (1996), The First Wives Club (1996), Oxygen (1999), Factory Girl (2006), Suburban Girl (2007), The Word (2013), Equity (2016) and The Independents (2018), which starred and was directed by his son Greg Naughton and featured actress/daughter Keira Naughton, usually had Jim cast as trustworthy husbands (well, not always) and well-dressed professionals. He possessed one of those strong, worldly faces you certainly know but may not quite place.
Into the millennium, Jim has had recurring roles on such series as Ally McBeal (1997), Gossip Girl (2007) and Hostages (2013). Naughton has also taken to the cabaret circuit where his simple, relaxed singing style was showcased in his award-winning one-man show "Street of Dreams." The show, which featured a number of eclectic songs from country and western to contemporary pop to classic standards, was seen at such venues as the Manhattan Theatre Club and Caroline's Comedy Club. His wife, former actress Pamela Parsons, died of cancer in 2013.- Writer

Jules Dassin was an Academy Award-nominated director, screenwriter and actor best known for his films Rififi (1955), Never on Sunday (1960), and Topkapi (1964).
He was born Julius Samuel Dassin on 18 December 1911, in Middletown, Connecticut, USA. He was one of eight children of Russian-Jewish immigrants, Samuel Dassin and Berthe Vogel. Young Dassin grew up in Harlem, and he attended Morris High School in the Bronx, graduating in 1929. After taking acting classes in Europe, he returned to New York. In 1934, he became and actor with the ARTEF Players (Arbeter Teater Farband), and was a member of the troupe until 1939. Dassin played character roles in Yiddish, mainly in the plays by Sholom Aleichem. But upon discovering "that an actor I was not," he switched to directing and writing. At that time, he joined the Communist Party of the United States, but left the party in 1939, he said, disillusioned after the Soviet Union signed a pact with Adolf Hitler.
Dassin came to Hollywood in 1940, and was an apprentice to directors Alfred Hitchcock and Garson Kanin. In 1941, he made his directorial debut at MGM with adaptation of a story by Edgar Allan Poe. Dassin's best directorial works for Hollywood include such criminal dramas as Brute Force (1947) starring Burt Lancaster; The Naked City (1948), one of the first police dramas shot on the streets of New York; and Night and the City (1950) starring Richard Widmark as a hustler in London who is caught up in his own schemes. While he was assigned by producer Darryl F. Zanuck to make the film, Dassin was accused of affiliation with the Communist Party in his past. Zanuck advised Dassin to "shoot the expensive scenes first, to hook the studio" so the film was finished and released in 1951. Dassin was reported to HUAC in a 1951 testimony by directors Edward Dmytryk and Frank Tuttle. That was enough to sink his career in Hollywood. Dassin was subpoenaed by HUAC in 1952 and eventually became blacklisted after refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee.
He left the United States for France in 1953 and struggled during his first years in Paris. He was not fluent in French, and his connections were limited. However, Dassin's low-budget film, Rififi (1955), famous for its long heist sequence that was free of dialog, won him the Best Director Award at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival. There, he met the Greek actress Melina Mercouri. Later, Dassin co-starred opposite Mercouri in his film Never on Sunday (1960), which won the Best Film Award at Cannes in 1960. At that time, the anti-Communist witch hunt in America was fading, and Dassin was accepted again. He received two Academy Award-nominations for directing and screen-writing for Topkapi (1964), starring Mercouri, Maximilian Schell, and Peter Ustinov. Dassin also served as member of jury at the Cannes and several other international film festivals.
Jules Dassin was married twice. He had three children with his first wife, violinist Beatrice Launer. His son, Joe Dassin, was a popular French singer in the 1960s and '70s, with such hits as "Bip Bip," "L'Eté Indien" and "Aux Champs-Èlysées." In 1966, Jules Dassin married Mercouri, an ardent anti-fascist who lost her Greek citizenship for opposing the junta, and the couple was living in Manhattan, remaining very active in their efforts to restore democracy in Greece during the dictatorship of the Colonels. After 1974, the couple returned to Greece, Mercouri became a member of the Greek Parliament, and Culture Minister of Greece. While living in Athens, Dassin was active in the effort to bring the 2500-year-old Elgin marbles of the Parthenon back to Athens from their current location at the British Museum in London. In this and other humanitarian causes, Dassin followed the last will of his late wife.
Jules Dassin died of complications caused by a flu, on April 1, 2008, at age 96, at Hygeia Hospital in Athens, Greece. He is survived by two daughters and grandchildren.- Actor

Nate Barlow was born on 6 July 1975 in Middletown, Connecticut, USA. He is a producer and actor, known for Tales from Beyond (2004), A Brief History of Hollywood (2020) and Chance (2002). He has been married to Debra Barlow since 26 August 2006.- Katharine Ingham was born on 15 August, 1902 at Middletown, Connecticut, the daughter of Charles Samuel (1867-1949) and Clara Louise Northup Ingham (1874-1946). Her father was for 23 years the headmaster at Governor Dummer Academy, an all-boys school in South Byfield, Massachusetts. Later he would teach at Yale University and serve five terms in the Connecticut State Legislature. Growing up in South Byfield, Katherine was the only girl student aloud to attend her father's school. Later she attended Centenary Collegiate Institute, a co-educational, preparatory school in Hackettstown, New Jersey. Katherine did not go on to college, but instead began working at the age of eighteen as an entertainment journalist for the Boston Traveler.
It was around this time that she married Thomas Stewart Brush (1890-1938), the son of a wealthy newspaper publisher in Ohio. It was after Katharine and her husband moved to Liverpool, Ohio, that she began writing to ease her boredom. In 1927 her short story "Night Club" (Harper's Magazine) received an O. Henry Award honorable mention and two years later "Him and Her" (Collier's Weekly 16 March) was given the O. Henry "Best Short Short" Award of 1929.
Katharine's marriage ended amicably in 1929 over geography. She wanted to live in New York and he needed to stay in Ohio because of the family publishing business. Later that year she married Hubert Charles Winans, a New York banker who had made a fortune trading Midwest wheat for Brazilian coffee. At first they referred to their marriage as a "trial" and for a time maintained separate residences. The couple would later divorce after nearly twelve years of marriage.
During her career she published numerous short stories that were serialized in magazines like Harper's, College Humor and Cosmopolitan; some of the more popular were assembled in her book "Night Club" (1929). Her short stories "Good Wednesday", "Football Girl" and "The Birthday Party" are among her best remembered. Many of Katherine's works were usually set in the post First World War period and were typified by her ability to tell a good story with humor.
Of her books, "Young Man of Manhattan" (1930) and "Red Headed Woman" (1931) were by far the most successful. Katherine's other books include: "Glitter" (1926), "Little Sins" (1927), "Other Women" (1933) "Don't Ever Leave Me" (1935), "This Is On Me" (1940), "You Go Your Way" (1941), "The Boy from Maine" (1942), "Out of My Mind" (1943), "This Man and this Woman" (1944) and "When She was Bad" (1948).
Katharine Brush died after an illness of several months on 10 June, 1952, at St. Luke's Hospital in New York. The illness had prevented Katharine from finishing her last novel, "Lover Come Back", which was intended to be published that fall. She was survived by her son, publisher Thomas Stewart Brush Jr., who at the time his death in 1992, had been a managing director of the Metropolitan Opera Association since 1978. - Dean Acheson was born on 11 April 1893 in Middletown, Connecticut, USA.
