12 Kilometers (2016)
10/10
Lovecraftian Horror With a Russian Twist
3 September 2018
The term "Lovecraftian" gets bandied about quite liberally in horror circles, whether in print or on screen. It is a lofty goal and all too often is attached to a project unworthy of the adjective. 12 Kilometers is not only Lovecraftian, it lives up to HPL's writing and concept without being a direct pastiche. The film is visually stunning, with camera pans that enhance the flow and pace of the script. The sound work is perfect, as it has to be since it is an integral part of the plot. The score builds tension quite well, and is used sparsely enough that when you hear the shift in music, your anticipation elevates with it. I found myself forgetting that this was an independent short, and wanted more when it was finished. I highly recommend this film to any fans of horror, the supernatural, or just great filmmaking.
