88 Minutes (2007)
5/10
Good Concept, Not So Good Movie.

Warning: Spoilers
88 Minutes is about a a forensic psychiatry professor who works for the FBI, and also has been told he has 88 minutes to live. Sounds like a pretty decent concept, but the way it was played out could have been much better. First, the character Mike Stempt could have been completely written out and there would be no change to the plot. Don't get me wrong, I am one of Benjamin McKenzie's biggest fans since the first episode of The O.C., but his character just wasn't needed. Leelee Sobieski's character, Lauren Douglas, was a bit annoying. I think that she is a good actress, but it seemed like she couldn't get into this part, whether or not she overplayed it or underplayed it, I'm not quite sure. To conclude, it wasn't an all star cast with phenomenal performances.

In one part of this movie, I believe when Dr. Gramm was looking for Pam, Pacino dives under a firetruck to get to his car. Some movies can be pretty hard to believe, as in Die Hard 4, but this was just ridiculous. Bruce Willis is like a god when it comes to doing improbable stunts, but when Pacino did that, it just felt really awkward.

I've recently seen a plethora of movies with terrible endings, hoping finally for a good one. This one disappointed be just as much as The Prestige and Stephen King's It. I understand how Lauren did everything, I understand when she found the time, I understand that she tricked everyone into believing her. What I don't understand is why she did all of it. Did I miss something during the phone conversation with Gramm and Forster? I understand she was pretending to be his lawyer, but what is the motive? Was she so sick and in love with him? They just left so many questions unanswered which really disappointed me.

Ever since the end of The O.C., I had been keeping track of McKenzie's upcoming films. This one had been in production for about two years. You'd think in that much time they would have been able to edit and perfect every little detail. I guess I may have just expected too much. -shrugs-
