A pair of socially awkward theoretical physicists meet their new neighbor Penny, who is their polar opposite.

Twenty-somethings Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper are friends, roommates and physics geniuses working at Cal Tech. As such, they are self-professed geeks. Their social companions are Howard Wolowitz and Raj Koothrappali (who does not speak to women), fellow geniuses at Cal Tech. Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, beautiful Penny, a waitress at the Cheesecake Factory and an aspiring screenwriter and actress, moves in next door to them in their apartment building. On their initial social interaction - an impromptu lunch in the guys' apartment - the guys learn that Penny has a different mentality than them. This difference however does not stop Leonard from being attracted to her. They also learn that Penny is heartbroken from the end of a four year relationship. Just because she asked, Leonard agrees to pick up her television from her ex-boyfriend, with who she is having a dispute about the ownership of said television. Getting the television may be more difficult than Leonard anticipated, but he will do almost anything to accomplish this favor for his attractive new neighbor.—Huggo

Two physicists, Leonard and Sheldon come home to find that a pretty blonde, named Penny has moved in across the hall. Wanting to impress her, Leonard invites her over for lunch. During the meal, she reveals that she just broke up with her boyfriend, and that he took her TV. Nervously, she asks him to go and retrieve it for her. Arriving at the man's house, he and Sheldon find that her boyfriend is a hulking brute who steals their pants (and keeps the TV) so they go home in their underwear. Despite the set-back, Leonard vows to win her heart.—Jerry Roberts

The physicists Leonard and Sheldon go to a high IQ sperm bank, but give up to donate the material since there is no evidence that their sperm would make any difference in the baby's intelligence. When they return home, they meet their new next door, the hot but not bright Penny that works in a cheesecake factory, and Leonard has a crush on her.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

After an unsuccessful visit to the high-IQ sperm bank (Cooper reneges on donating sperm after calculating the odds of his sperm generating an intelligent offspring), Dr. Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) and Dr. Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) return home to find aspiring actress Penny (Kaley Cuoco) is their new neighbor across the hall from their apartment. Penny is from Nebraska Sheldon was sent to boarding school as a boy, due to his work with lasers.

Sheldon thinks Leonard, who is immediately interested in her, is chasing a dream he will never catch. Sheldon has 212 friends on MySpace and likes them as he doesn't have to meet any of them. Sheldon is not a fan of any type of human contact and cannot understand Leonard's need to get close to Penny

Leonard invites Penny to his and Sheldon's apartment for Indian food (as a courtesy to a neighbor who has just moved in next door), where she asks to use their shower since hers is broken. Sheldon has his own spot to sit on the couch (the spot is a nice distance from the radiator (it is close enough to the radiator to be warm, but not so close to be stifling), in the middle of a cross breeze (when you open windows at both ends of the apartment) and at a nice angle to the TV (There is no glare on the TV, and Sheldon doesn't have to turn his neck to watch it)).

While wrapped in a towel (she had come out of the shower to ask for Leonard help in switching the shower to the bathtub.. the handle sticks and hence required experience to operate), she gets to meet their visiting friends Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg), a wannabe ladies' man (Caltech department of applied physics) who tries to hit on her, and Rajesh Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar), who is unable to speak to her as he suffers from Selective Mutism in the presence of women. Penny is a Sagittarius, claims to be a vegetarian but loves steak, an aspiring actress, but waitresses at the cheesecake factory. Leonard is lactose intolerant. Sheldon's unawareness of social protocols embarrasses Leonard, but he is helpless to stop it

Leonard is so infatuated with Penny that, after helping her use their shower, he agrees to retrieve her TV from her ex-boyfriend Kurt (Brian Patrick Wade). However, Kurt's physical superiority overwhelms Leonard's and Sheldon's combined IQ of 360, and they return without pants or TV. Sheldon had repeatedly warned Leonard against taking on Kurt, but Leonard underestimated the odds of being humiliated and felt that doing this favor for Penny would increase his chances of starting a relationship with her. The guys were not allowed into the building by Kurt, but then the genius duo were outsmarted by a duo of girl scouts who press every buzzer in the building and somebody simply lets them in, but pressing the door opener in their apartment. Penny, feeling bad, offers to take the guys out to dinner, initiating a friendship with them.
